Box Score 2 TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Nick Annunziata drove in five runs and senior
Tim Gallagher threw a complete game to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Skidmore College, this afternoon at Robison Field. With wins of 6-3 and 4-1, the Engineers improve to 14-6 overall (6-4 Liberty League), while the Thoroughbreds drop to 5-11 (0-5 Liberty League).
In game one, Rensselaer plated three runs in the bottom of the second. Senior
Eric Kozak (New York, NY/The Dalton School) drove in the first run with a looping single to center. Annunziata (Neshanic Station, NJ/St. Joseph) then brought home two with a double over the head of Skidmore centerfielder Marco Baratta (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly), to make it 3-0.
RPI starter
Jared Jensen (Kingston, NY/Kingston) then kept the Thoroughbreds off the board until the top of the fifth, when senior designated hitter Alex Pavelock (New Paltz, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) drove a single to center, scoring Baratta.
Skidmore pulled even at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, thanks to a single by freshman Jeff Spindel (Andover, MA/Andover) and an RPI error.
The Engineers fought right back scoring three times in the bottom half of the inning to regain the three-run lead (6-3). Annunziata got the rally started with a run-scoring single through the left side, before junior
Tim LeSuer (Oak View, CA/Nordhoff) drove a hit up middle. RPI then took advantage of a Skidmore error to cap the scoring run.
Sophomore lefthander
Greg Echeverria (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) earned his second save of the season, recording the final two outs of the game, including a strikeout.
Game two saw Gallagher (Snohomish, WA/Snohomish) improve to 3-0, allowing one unearned run on five hits in 7.0 innings. He struck out six and walked three.
The Thoroughbreds scored the game's first run in the top of the second, thanks to an RBI-fielder's choice off the bat of freshman catcher Daniel Dasgupta (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle).
Rensselaer answered with a run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly from LeSuer. The Engineers then took the lead for good in the fourth, on another two-run double by Annunziata. LeSuer added a two-out single in the sixth to make it 4-1.
Skidmore threatened in the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Gallagher was able to get Pavelock to fly out to center to end the game.
The Engineers are back in action this weekend, when they play a home and home series with Union College. RPI hosts the Dutchmen for a doubleheader on Saturday (1pm), before traveling to Schenectady for a twin bill on Sunday (12pm).
