The first half saw six goals scored between the two teams. Skidmore got on the board first, just over three minutes into play, as Krista Lamoreaux (Avon, CT / Gunnery) took a shot that went directly into the near corner of the cage. RPI answered at 14:58 on a penalty corner, as
Angela Cascio (Wyndmoor, PA / Springside School) passed the ball in to
Colleen Fowler (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional), who nailed the ball into the back of the cage.
The Thoroughbreds then scored back-to-back goals within a six-minute span. DeGregory (Greenwich, NY / Greenwich) notched her first goal of the day at 22:16 with a breakway, getting an assist from Sam Skott, as the two teamed up to carry the ball through the entire offensive zone. Lamoreaux then assisted Skott at 28:35, driving the ball into the circle where Skott was waiting with a tip-in.
With just over 30 minutes elapsed, the Engineers struck for their second goal of the game. During a scramble in front of the cage,
Jena Nawfel (Waterville, ME / Waterville) poked the ball forward to
Megan Jones (Stevensville, MD / Kent Island), who pushed the ball past Skidmore goalkeeper Amy Beck (Dayton, OH / Oakwood). The Thoroughbreds would get the final say in the first half, as DeGregory struck for her second tally, taking a shot that rattled through the defense for the score, giving Skidmore a 4-2 advantage at the break.
Skidmore controlled most of the play in the second half, with Skott (Hoosick Falls, NY / Hoosick Falls) scoring the only goal of the period in the 58th minute. Sam Revera (Miller Place, NY / Miller Place) tipped the ball towards the cage on a penalty corner, where Skott knocked it in behind Engineer goalkeeper
Hannah Clough (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional).
The Thoroughbreds outshot Rensselaer, 36-9, and held a 13-7 advantage in penalty corners. Clough played all 70 minutes for the Engineers, making 18 saves, while Beck recorded four stops for Skidmore.
