Football Headed to Hobart

TRAVELING ENGINEERS: RPI boards the bus for its final game outside the Capital Region, traveling to Hobart for a Liberty League contest ... The Engineers are 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference ... The Statesmen, who had a bye last week, are 4-2 and 2-1.

AWAY FROM HOME: Rensselaer is 1-2 on the road this season, losing to Alfred, defeating WPI and falling at SLU.

KEY CONTEST: The Engineers remain in the hunt for the Liberty League title, sitting in second place ... St. Lawrence (3-0) is in first and Hobart is in third (2-1) ... The regular season champion earns a berth into the NCAA Playoffs. 

COMMON OPPONENTS: Rensselaer and Hobart have two common opponents ... They have both defeated WPI and Merchant Marine.

ALL-TIME VS. HOBART: RPI and Hobart have played 58 times with the Statesmen holding a slight advantage in the head-to-head series, 29-28-1 ... The first meeting was October 15, 1910, a 6-5 Statesmen victory in Troy.

RECENTLY: Hobart has won each of the last three meetings and is 10-3 in the most recent 13.

CLOSE CONTESTS: In the seven games between 2005 and 2011, Hobart outscored RPI by only 20 points (190-170) ... Six contests were decided by one score, including four games by three points or fewer.

LAST 10: In the last 10 meetings between Rensselaer and Hobart, the Statesmen hold a 7-3 advantage, including a 3-1 edge in Troy.

IN GENEVA: The Engineers are 2-2 in their last four games at Boswell Field ... In 26 all-time meetings in Geneva, Rensselaer is 11-14-1 (.442).

IN LEAGUE PLAY: Rensselaer is 8-12 in Liberty League play against the Statesmen.

IN THE RECORD BOOK: RPI's 28 wins against Hobart are the third most against any one school ... The Engineers have 60 wins against WPI and 29 versus Rochester.

OVERTIME: Rensselaer has played six overtime games in school history and two have been against Hobart, both in Geneva ... The Engineers lost 36-35 in 1996 (Nov. 16) and were defeated 56-48 in 2005 (Sept. 24).

RPI LAST WEEK: Senior Nick Schlatz rushed for a career-high 115 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries and RPI had a total of 239 yards on the ground in defeating Rochester, 35-21 ... The game was tied at 21-21 in the fourth quarter, but RPI regained the lead on a drive that began on the Rochester 29-yard line after the U of R was stuffed on a 4th-and-1 play ... Sophomore Mike Tivinis ran in from six yards out ... On the next series, Rochester was again stopped on a fourth down play and this time RPI went 55 yards, capped by a two-yard run by Schlatz ... Tivinis finished with 80 rushing yards on 12 carries, while Matt Lane had 23 yards on the ground along with a team-high six receptions for 64 yards ... Jeff Avery completed 16 of 33 passes for 161 yards ... The Engineers forced four turnovers, including three interceptions ... Sophomore Bryan Hayes and senior Mark Grimes both had 10 tackles ... Junior Malik Joseph had nine stops (4 solo) and senior Philip Lanieiri III had two interceptions.

HONORED: Senior Nick Schlatz earned Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week, sophomore Bryan Hayes was named Defensive Performer of the Week and sophomore Johnny Ramsdell garnered Special Teams Performer of the Week ... Schlatz rushed for a career-high 115 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries in a 35-21 win over Rochester ... Hayes, a safety, led the Engineers with 10 tackles, including six unassisted, with a forced fumble ... Ramsdell had an 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7 ... He also ran the ball once and had three catches for nine yards.

UPCOMING: The Engineers are off next Saturday before wrapping up the regular season with a pair of league games ... They host Springfield on November 7 (12pm) before crossing the Hudson River to play Union in the Dutchman Shoes Trophy Game on November 14 ... The game with the Dutchmen begins at noon at Frank Bailey Field.
