Live VideoGAMEDAY: Rensselaer plays its third game in six days, hosting Geneseo in a non-league contest.
FIRST TWO: The Engineers opened the season on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Hartwick ... Yesterday they played at No. 14 Mount Holyoke and defeated the Lyons 2-1 in dramatic fashion.
AGAINST MOUNT HOLYOKE:
Megan Jones tallied with 58 seconds remaining to lift the Rensselaer to a 2-1 win over No. 14 Mount Holyoke ... After being unable to convert on two penalty corner chances, Mount Holyoke found itself in trouble late as the Engineers were given a corner in the 69th minute ... Injecting was Jones, who fired the ball to the top of the arc to senior forward
Hana Murphy ... Murphy sent a shot back into traffic, which was tipped by sophomore forward
Jena Nawfel and back on to the stick of Jones for the goal at the right side ... The Lyons were awarded a penalty corner with seconds to go, but the ball was redirected in traffic, going just past the box ... Nawfel scored in the seventh minute to give RPI an early lead ...
Rachel Kaufman was outstanding, stopping 12 shots and
Taylor Clink made a defensive save ... Liz DiCesare had nine stops for the home team.
AGAINST THE HAWKS: Sophomore
Megan Jones scored twice and RPI outshot Hartwick 34-15 in defeating the Hawks 3-1 in a non-league contest ... Hartwick took the lead at 12:46 of the first half, but the Engineers answered with a marker of their own off the stick of freshman
Mikaela DiBello just over two minutes later ... Jones then scored her first of the season and fourth of her career at the 31-minute mark and RPI led 2-1 at halftime ... Her second tally, which came at 43:11, provided breathing room ... Sophomore
Hilary Fiorentino stopped five shots in the first half for the win, while freshman
Rachel Kaufman had four second half saves in relief ... Junior Shannon Carter had 12 saves for Hartwick, which was outshot, 34-15 ... Rensselaer held a 17-6 edge in penalty corners.
TWO GOAL GAMES:
Megan Jones scored twice in the first game of the season, marking the third time in the last three games Rensselaer has had a student-athlete record multiple goals ... Both
Hana Murphy (2 goals) and
Molly Zuk (3) had at least two goals in the second-to-last game of the season in 2014, a 7-1 victory over Castleton.
TODAY'S OPPONENT: Geneseo began its season on Wednesday with a 4-1 win over Elmira ... Senior Sarah Malinak had two goals on a game-high seven shots and freshman Gabriella Clare and sophomore Molly Higgins tallied once each for the Knights, who outshot the Golden Flyers, 23-5 ... Dayna Mercer made three saves for the win.
LAST SEASON VS. GENESEO:
Molly Zuk scored the game-winner just 2:15 into the second half to lead Rensselaer to a 2-0 win over Geneseo at Harkness Field ... After a scoreless first half, Rensselaer broke the tie at 37:15 when
Hana Murphy passed the ball to Zuk, who tipped it away from Dayna Mercer and into the net ... RPI doubled its lead in the 43rd minute when
Jena Nawfel drove an unassisted shot from just inside the far circle straight into the back of the cage ... Geneseo let loose a flurry of shots against RPI's
Hannah Clough, but the senior goalkeeper stopped each one to preserve the shutout ... Both teams took 17 shots, with RPI holding a 12-5 lead in the first half and Geneseo posting a 12-5 advantage in the second ... The Knights came away with a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners ...
