Mike Tivinis rushed for a pair of touchdowns to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football team to a 38-6 victory over SUNY Maritime , the Robert M. "Scotty" Whitelaw Bowl on Sunday evening, to conclude the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) DIII Football Fest at Franklin Field. With the win, the Engineers conclude their season with a 6-5 record, while the Privateers are also 6-5.
Tivinis earned MVP honors, rushing for 69 yards and the pair of scores on 13 carries.
Johnny Ramsdell also scored twice for RPI, which finished with 429 total yards, including 340 on the ground.
RPI took a 3-0 lead on a 20-yard field goal by
Christian Kapp at 9:16.
The Privateers then took a 6-3 lead off a block punt returned for a touchdown by Karl Riek. With 24 seconds remaining in the first quarter, RPI regained the lead for good (10-6) on a 17-yard run by Tivinis.
RPI added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter on short-distance runs by Ramsdell and Tivinis to take a 24-6 lead heading into the locker room.
The Engineers went to the air early in the third quarter, as
Tommy Avery found Ramsdell for a 23-yard score, giving Rensselaer a 31-6 edge.
Nick Cella capped the contest for RPI with a 30-yard dash to the end zone at 14:50.
For Maritime, Thomas Wright rushed for 90 yards and Christian Castle collected 43 receiving yards.
Rensselaer saw 11 players rush the ball 57 times for 340 yards and four scores. Avery finished 4 for 7 with 89 yards and a touchdown and no interceptions.
Keaton Ackermann hauled in two of the four for 66 yards.
Defensively, senior
Ryan Buss had five tackles (all solo), while
Thomas Bennett had two of RPI's four sacks on the night.
Sean Egan had four tackles and a fumble recovery.
