PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Senior
Ben Fazio won two races and sophomore
Grant O'Connor added a win of his own and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team won the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Championship Meet, narrowly holding off Utica College, 163.5-158. Ithaca College was third (101 points) in the 13-school event, which was held at St. John Fisher College.
Rensselaer's coaching staff, led by
Colin Tory, earned Staff of the Meet.
Fazio earned 20 team points by winning the 800 meters and 1500 meters. In the 800, he outran 22 others, finishing in a time of 1:56.56. He also captured the 1500 meters in 4:01.14, out-legging 24 others, including the runner-up's time of 4:03.35.
O'Connor was first in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:47.71. The runner-up was nearly two seconds behind (14:49.43) in the 22-person field.
The Engineers earned a total of 15 points in the 3000 meter steeplechase thanks to three top 8 finishes.
Sean O'Connor, also a sophomore, was second with a time of 9:28.18, just one spot in front of teammate
Danny Napora, who crossed the finish line in 9:45.75 for six points.
Johnny Capobianco was eighth - good enough for a point - with a time of 9:53.17.
RPI, the defending champions of the meet, had three second place finishes in field events on Saturday. Senior captain
Erik Trinkle was runner-up in the high jump (1.90) with teammate
Max Maritato in fourth (1.85).
Matt Vitagliano was second in the triple jump (14.01) and
Mark Shapiro finished in the same spot in the discus (40.92).
Sam Keller, a senior, was fifth in the discus at 40.08 meters.
