GAMEDAY: The Engineers (2-0) continue the 2017 with a non-league home game against Western New England University (1-1) of the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

FIRST MEETINGS: Rensselaer and the Golden Bears have never faced each other ... RPI's first game of the season, a 45-0 win over William Paterson, was the first meeting between those two schools.

FAST START: The Engineers have defeated William Paterson (45-0) and WPI (36-14) in their first two games ... RPI has scored 80+ points in its first two games six times in program history: 97 in 1999 ... 93 in 1967 ... 90 in 1998 ... 81 in 2002 & 2017 ... 80 in 2012.

RPI LAST WEEK: Junior Ed Trimpert amassed 234 yards on 11 for 17 passing and five touchdowns and senior Sean Egan accounted for three of six WPI turnovers as RPI reclaimed the Transit Trophy with a 36-14 victory in Alumni Stadium ... Senior Mike Tivinis ran for 88 yards on 13 chances as Trimpert connected with five different receivers ... Senior linebacker Brandt Beck totaled 10 tackles, including two for loss and an interception ... Paul Marinan also had two stops for loss.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Following a game in which he tied the school record with three interceptions, Sean Egan was chosen to the D3football.com National Team of the Week ... In a 36-14 victory at WPI in the Transit Trophy Game, Egan a cornerback, had two solo tackles, three interceptions with three return yards and two pass breakups ... A captain, he and the defense held the Engineers to just 67 yards rushing on 26 carries (2.6 average) and only seven points until a late fourth quarter score (2:38 remaining). 

HONORED: Junior quarterback Ed Trimpert was chosen as the Offensive Performer of the Week by the Liberty League ... Christian Kapp was named the Special Teams Performer of the Week ... Trimpert completed 11 of 17 passes for a career-high 234 yards and five touchdowns - to five different receivers ... He was not intercepted and he finished with three rushing yards ... His touchdown passes were from 5, 26, 33, 15 and 10 yards ... In total, six different receivers caught passes ... Kapp, a senior kicker, was honored after making four of his extra point attempts and scoring on a two-point conversion after picking up a loose ball off a blocked attempt and rushing it into the end zone ... He also had six kickoffs for 371 yards (61.0 average) with five of them going for touchbacks.

HONOR ROLL: Brandt Beck was chosen to the league's Weekly Honor Roll after leading all tacklers with 10 stops - all unassisted - with 2.0 for lost yards (4), a forced fumble and an interception with a 38-yard return at WPI ... His interception ended a long drive (12 plays) and set up Rensselaer's first score ... His forced fumble came in the third quarter at the RPI 41 yard line ... Beck also helped hold the Engineers to just 67 yards rushing on 26 carries (2.6 average).

THREE PICKS: Senior Sean Egan intercepted a school record-tying three passes in Saturday's win at WPI ... It was the 13th time an Engineers player has had three picks in a game ... The most recent prior to Saturday was by Tim Acker against WPI in 2007.

GAME 1: RPI gained 493 yards of offense while holding William Paterson to 51 yards, including only seven through the air, in defeating the Pioneers, 45-0, in the season opener for both teams ... Rensselaer jumped out to a 7-0 lead on its first possession when Tivinis scored at 11:50 of the first quarter ... Following a Rory McCarthy interception, Ed  Trimpert hit Rob Law from four yards out just over two minutes later for a 14-0 edge ... Ethan Wells scored his first of two touchdowns with 3:14 to play in the first quarter and Christian Kapp kicked a 23-yard field goal as time expired in the first half ... RPI added 14 points in the third quarter, including a 45-yard touchdown pass from Trimpert to Pat Etter, and one in the fourth for the final margin.

HONORED: Junior quarterback Ed Trimpert was named the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week after he completed 11 of 14 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns against William Paterson ... He threw a four-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead and then a 45-yard scoring strike in the third for a 31-0 edge ... He was neither intercepted, nor sacked ... Trimpert also rushed six times for 31 yards, including a long of 15 yards.

WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: Tabbed for the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll following their performances against William Paterson were senior defensive lineman Malik Joseph and classmate Christian Kapp, a kicker ... Joseph had six total tackles with three unassisted and 2.0 for lost yards (5) ... Kapp was recognized after connecting on his only field goal attempt, a 23-yard try to end the first half, and each of his six extra point attempts ... He also had seven kickoffs for 445 yards (63.6 per) with one kickoff for a touchback.

TOTAL MATCHED: RPI quarterbacks Ed Trimpert (5) and Tommy Avery (2) combined to throw seven touchdowns in 11 games last season ... Trimpert has thrown seven touchdowns in the first two games of this season.

DEPTH ON OFFENSE: Rensselaer has had 14 different ball carriers in its first two games and nine different players have caught at least one pass.

DEFENSIVE DEPTH: There have been 28 different Engineers to have registered a tackle.

WELCOME BACK: Rensselaer returns 17 starters from 2016, including eight on offense, seven on defense and both the kicker and punter ... There are 42 letter winners back among the 69 returners.

NEWCOMERS: The Engineers welcome 53 newcomers to the team.

TWO-DEEP BREAKDOWN: RPI has 52 unique individuals on the two-deep ... They include 21 juniors, 16 seniors, eight sophomores and seven freshmen.

OFFENSIVE UNITS: Of the 11 offensive starters, seven are juniors, three are seniors and one is a sophomore ... The second unit includes four freshmen, four juniors, two seniors and a junior.

DEFENSIVE UNITS: The 11 defensive starters all all seniors (6) and juniors (5) ... The second unit features four sophomores and four juniors, two seniors and a freshman.

ON SPECIAL TEAMS: Rensselaer's special teamers - not including those listed on either offense or defense - are two seniors, two sophomores and a freshman on the first unit ... The second unit has a freshman, a junior and a senior.

RECORD SETTER: Conor Davies set the school record for punt return yards in a season during the 2016 campaign with 407 ... The previous mark of 317 was set by Tim Acker in 2007 ... Paul St. John holds the career mark of 538, which he established from 1990-93 ... Davies, a junior, is at 440 yards entering Saturday's action.

KAPP ON WATCH LIST: Senior Christian Kapp has been selected for the Fred Mitchell Award 2017 Watch List, which includes 36 of the nation's top collegiate place-kickers based on excellence on the football field during the 2016 season and for continued community service during their off-season ... He is under consideration following a junior season in which he was successful on 9 of 12 field goals and 32 of 32 point-after-touchdowns in 11 games ... He had field goals in six different games, including a long of 47 yards, on his way to leading the Engineers in scoring with 59 points ... Kapp's 51 kickoffs went for 2,943 yards (57.7 average) ... He had nine touchbacks ... He has hit 15 of 24 field goals and 73 of 75 PATs in his career.

RPI LAST SEASON: The Engineers split their first four games a year ago before defeating conference opponents Rochester (51-13) and No. 22 Hobart (21-17) ... After three consecutive losses, RPI bounced back to win its final two games, including the Dutchman Shoes Trophy Game over Union (21-12) and the ECAC Scotty Whitelaw Bowl against Maritime (38-6).

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND TO DATE: Springfield outscored No. 24 Western New England 35-7 in the second half to earn a 35-21 victory in the fifth annual Pynchon SAW rivalry game in the opener ... Senior quarterback Anthony Service threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns, while also gaining 49 yards on the ground for the Golden Bears ... Last week, WNEU established a 21-0 first quarter lead and didn't look back on its way to a 38-6 victory over Westfield State, retaining the Presidents' Cup for the fourth consecutive year ... Service completed 19-of-24 (79%) pass attempts for 288 yards and four touchdowns.
