ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior
Rachel Kaufman stopped 11 shots and three different Engineers scored goals as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team defeated Oneonta, 3-1, on Friday night. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but was moved up due to expected inclement weather.
Senior
Taylor Clink scored RPI's first goal on a penalty stroke, sophomore
Olivia Jackson deflected a
Mikaela DiBello pass into the goal and
Charisse Stakutis scored for the second straight contest to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Kaufman made it stand up, allowing just one marker with under three minutes to play in regulation.
Rensselaer (6-11), which plays at Vassar in the Liberty League Tournament on Wednesday, opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Clink converted a penalty stroke after a foul was called on the Oneonta (10-8) goalie inside the circle.
Â
The Engineers added a second goal five minutes later on Jackson's deflection that went up and over the shoulder of goalie Carly Olsen. DiBello carried the ball into the circle and took a shot from almost on the end line that was deflected upward by Jackson who was being closely guarded by an Oneonta defender.
Â
Oneonta (10-8) out shot Rensselaer 6-3 in the opening half while earning six penalty corners. Four of Oneonta's six shots were on cage, but were stopped by Kaufman.
Â
The Engineers put the game out of reach in the 64th minute on a rebound goal by Stakutis. The original play was started on a penalty corner after a shot by
Jena Dolinar was saved by Olsen. Stakutis was positioned mid-circle to the left and fired a shot to the back of the goal before Olsen could reset herself.
Â
The Red Dragons did not go quietly, pressuring the RPI defense in the final five minutes of the contest and the pressure paid off in the 68th minute off a penalty corner. Sophomore Grace Bilow inserted the ball to classmate Colleen Geyer, who then settled the pass before blasting a shot by Kaufman.
Â
Oneonta finished the game outshooting RPI 17-6 including 12 shots on goal. Olsen made a pair of saves for the Red Dragons.
