TROY, N.Y. - Following a victory at RIT to begin the season, two Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes were honored with weekly men's swimming & diving Liberty League awards. Senior
Graham Zola was named Swimmer of the Week and freshman
Tony Min captured Rookie of the Week. They both helped the Engineers defeat the Tigers, 183-117.
Zola (Fargo, ND / Davies) won all four events in which he entered in the dual meet. Individually he was first in the 50 free with a time of 21.84 and the 100 free in 47.91, which was nearly three seconds ahead of the runner-up (50.08). In two relays, Zola, a captain, swam the anchor in both, helping the 200 medley to first in 1:38.02 and the 200 free to a win in 1:27.96.
An aeronautical engineering major, he was second on the Engineers with 329.50 total points, including 200.00 as an individual, last season. He had seven wins, four seconds and three third place finishes. He swam on record-setting relays in the 200 medley (1:32.92), 200 free (1:23.04), 400 free (3:04.15) and 800 free (6:51.83). The year before Zola won three times with a team-high 11 runner-ups and six thirds to finish with 180.00 points. He was also part of four relay records.
In his first collegiate meet, Min (Exeter, NH / Exeter) helped earn 23 points in the victory. He began the meet by swimming third on the victorious 200 medley relay team and then won the 200 freestyle in 1:47.87. He later finished third in the 100 butterfly (52.29) before swimming on the fifth place 200 free relay team (1:31.58).
A computer science major, Min swam for four years in high school, where he set school records in the 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. He was the team MVP twice, leading the school to two New Hampshire State Championships.
Rensselaer is back in the water on October 26 when it hosts Ithaca College in a dual meet at Robison Pool (2pm).
