UTICA, N.Y. - Aided by four wins and three second place finishes, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team compiled 113 points to tie Lock Haven University for first place in the 14-school, multi-divisional Utica College Pioneer Invitational. The host Pioneers were third with 112.50 points, followed by Oneonta State (83) and Colgate University (56.50).
The Engineers earned 28 points in the pole vault alone as
James Zeolla was first,
Joey Hinckley finished second,
Casey Selinske was third and
Eoin O'Gara was fifth. Zeolla, a sophomore, reached 4.70 meters with Hinckley and Selinske both getting to 3.80 and O'Gara maxing at 3.50.Â
Also boasting top two finishes were both of Rensselaer's 4x400 relay teams, crossing in 3:29.69 and 3:39.21, respectively. The victorious squad includedÂ
Alex Ryan,
Sean Shannon,
Domenick Rayleonard and
Luke Lyons, while the runner-up squad was Hinckley,
Raymond Rivituso,
Rahul Maharjan and Brendan Kiyak.
Lyons also had an individual win, taking the 400 meters in 50.57, which was more than a second in front of Dillon Aryeh of Colgate (51.61).
Also victorious on the track was junior
Will Hawkins, who ran the 5000 meters in a time of 15:39.71, good enough for an 11-second win ahead of Chris Hine of Lock Haven (15:48.03). In the 60 Hurdles,
Josh Dobransky was second with a time of 9.09.
Others in the top three were
Luke Kovalcin in the high jump and
Josh Cohen in the weight throw.Â
The Engineers compete again next Friday and Saturday when it travels to Boston University for the David Hemery Valentine Invite.
