WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - The foursome of
Davis Piercy,
Luke Lyons,
Sean Shannon and
Matt Lecky combined on a distance medley relay team and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes finished seventh with a time of 10:00.76 at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship at the JDL Fast Track. Their placement earned them National All-America as the top eight in the field of 20 squads are recognized.
Piercy began the race and legged out a 3:05.8 in the first 1200 meters. He passed the baton to Lyons, who went 400 meters in 50.7 seconds. Shannon, a freshman, ran the 800 meters in 1:59.5 before Lecky ran the 1600 meter leg - one mile - 4:04.7, which was the second fastest time in that distance in the event. He helped RPI move from the middle of the pack to a podium finish. The Engineers were only .48 from sixth and just over one second from a top four finish.
Also competing for Rensselaer on Friday was graduate student
John Reed, who ran the 5000 meters. He finished in 14:58.01 to place 18th.
In action on Saturday is Jacy Scharlow in the women's high jump, Morgan Lee in the women's 3000 meters and Lecky in the men's 3000 meters.
