WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Senior
Josh Cohen won twice, 11 other individuals also finished first and two relays were victorious for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's track & field teams, which competed at the Farley Invitational hosted by Williams College. The meet, which also included Castleton University and Vassar College, was non team scoring.
A thrower, Cohen captured the discus with a heave of 45.55 meters on his third attempt and the hammer with a maximum effort of 50.67, which came on his fifth try. He was fifth in the shot put. Classmate
Jessey Bruening won the women's shot put with a throw of 10.44 meters on her sixth and final throw. She had a previous best of 10.37 meters (5th attempt). Teammate
Holly Lauzon was second at 9.33 meters. Bruening had a runner-up finish of her own, securing second in the hammer (33.98) and trailing only teammate
Laura Davis, who reached 38.44 meters.
Finishing third in the women's hammer was
Yasmine Elmady, who also competed in the discus, which she won. The freshman opened with a 30.96 and the bettered that with her next attempt of 32.06 and that was good enough for the victory. Davis was second in the discus (28.90).
The Engineers had a victory and a runner-up in the javelin as well with freshman
Grace Garman winning the women's (30.50) and
Evan White placing second in the men's (51.73).
Senior
Maya Verma had one of Rensselaer's two victories in the jumping events, winning the high jump at 1.57 meters. She eclipsed the bar at that height on her third leap.
Emily Vallee, also a senior, won the triple jump at 10.68 meters with teammate
Julia Hubbard as the runner-up (10.15). Jana Frattlellone was runner-up in the long jump (5.01) with Vallee and
Ileana Sirois tying for third (4.84).
Shawn Putman was second in the men's long jump (6.57), followed by
Tim Wise in third (6.51), and
Luke Kovalcin was runner-up in the men's high jump (1.82).
Victorious in the pole vault was
Joey Hinckley, who cleared the bar at 4.30 on his second attempt at that height, allowing him to edge teammate
James Zeolla (4.15).
Hinckley also earned a win on the track as he helped the 4x100 team to first with a time of 43.95. He was joined by
Bate Egbe,
Liam Pek and
Max Liu. The women's 4x100 had a runner-up finish (49.35), while the men's 4x400 squad of
Rahul Maharjan,
Alex Ryan,
Domenick Rayleonard and
Owen Haas finished first (3:27.79).
A freshman, Liu was the 200 meter dash in 22.71, while
Kat Morin, who was on the second place relay team, was runner-up in the women's 200 (26.12). The senior did win the 100, crossing in a time of 12.69 seconds.
RPI had both winners in the 5000 meters with
Leah Goodloe winning the women's race (18:55.57) and
Jake Cooper claiming the men's (15:22.82). Teammates Stephen Spreizer,
Abel Hagos and
Jared Gridley were second, third and fourth, respectively, in the men's 5k.
The Engineers had three of the top four finishers in the 800, led by
Luke Lyons with a time of 1:53.01. He was followed by
Davis Piercy (1:55.67) and
Sean Shannon (1:55.82).
And in the hurdles,
Bate Egbe was the runner-up in the men's 110 meters (16.12) and
Maria Domingo was second in the women's 100 (16.79).
