TROY, N.Y. - Senior
Josh Cohen won twice and six other individuals earned one victory apiece for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team, which hosted the multi-divisional Capital District Classic at Ned Harkness Track & Field. Eleven other schools also had competitors, along with RPI alums and unattached athletes.
Cohen had first place finishes in both the discus and hammer, while finishing third in the javelin. He reached 43.86 meters in the discus to outdistance the runner-up's best effort of 42.64 meters. In the hammer, Cohen had a throw of 53.57 meters, which was nearly four meters in front of the second place finisher's 49.66. And in the javelin, he trailed a pair of teammates with his 47.78 toss.
Justin Park won the event at 51.29 and
Evan White was second with an effort of 49.78.
Rensselaer also had the top two finishers in three other events with two coming in jumps.
Luke Kovalcin won the high jump in 1.80 meters, followed by
Tim Wise's 1.75 and
Jacob Haqq captured the triple jump with a leap of 13.46 meters.
Robert Smith was the runner-up at 12.62.
Shawn Putman was the second place finisher in the long jump (7.05).
James Zeolla captured the pole vault with a height of 4.60 meters. Michael Baker of the University of Albany was second (4.30) and RPI's
Joey Hinckley tied for third (4.00) with two others.
Junior
Luke Lyons won the 400 in 49.06 and freshmanÂ
Sean Shannon was the runner-up (51.39). Teammates
Peter Cavanaugh and
Rahul Maharjan placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Also first on the track was
Jason Gibbons, who won the 3000 Steeplechase with a time of 9:32.12.
Cory Kennedy (9:43.61) was second and
Patrick Smyth (9:43.77) was third, finishing just .16 from each other.
Bate Egbe was second in the 100 Hurdles,
Devin Smith was runner-up in the 400 Hurdles,
Matthew Smalling was second in the 800 meters and the 4x100 team crossed the finish line with just one squad ahead of it.
RPI is back in action on Friday and Saturday when it competes in the Liberty League Championship at Vassar College.
