Evan White finished second in the javelin and
John Reed was the runner-up in the 10000 meters to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team to second place after the first day of the two-day Liberty League Championship at Weinberg Track & Prentiss Complex at Vassar College.
The Engineers, the 12-time defending champions, have 56 points and trail only Ithaca College's 73 points in the 8-school event. Action continues - and concludes - on Saturday.
A senior, White reached 55.17 meters on his sixth and final attempt to earn eight points for the team. He was one spot ahead of teammate
Justin Park, who had a throw of 53.28, also on his sixth attempt. They both trailed the winner, Justin Showstead of Ithaca, who reached 57.77 meters on his last attempt.
RPI also had the second and third place finishers in the 10000 meters with Reed crossing in 30:29.55 and
Owen Szabo finishing in 30:46.58. They combined for 14 points with
Jonathan Craun (6th place; 3 points) and
Will Hawkins (7th place; 2 points) also contributing to a 19-point event. Miles Takiguchi of the host Brewers won the race with a time of 30:13.51.
Also on the track, Rensselaer earned 15 points in the 3000 Steeple as
Jason Gibbons finished third (9:27.08),
Patrick Smyth was fourth (9:31.76) and
Cory Kennedy finished fifth (9:40.81).
Earning a fourth place finish in the hammer throw was senior
Josh Cohen, who hit 49.32 on his first attempt. Park was seventh in the event with a throw of 46.56 meters, which he managed on his third try.
Scoring a point in the long jump was
Robert Smith, who went for 6.56 meters.
