ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Behind three victories and four runner-up finishes on the second day of the Liberty League Championship, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team edged the University of Rochester to win the title. The Engineers had 224 points to the 215 by the Yellowjackets. RIT was third with 172 points.
Senior
Matt Lecky won the 1500 meters in a facility record and meet record time of 3:48.98, which was two seconds in front of Scott Sikorski of Rochester. RPI's
Davis Piercy was third, just two seconds behind Sikorski with a time of 3:52.61.Â
Lecky also ran the 800 meters, finishing third in a time of 1:54.85.
The Engineers boasted the top three finishers in the 5000 meters with
Cory Kennedy winning,
Jason Gibbons in second, and
Mitchell Dailey in third. The trio ran times of 14:40.54, 14:41.08, and 14:44.91, respectively.Â
In the 200 meters, freshman
Donovan Myrick was second with a time of 21.76, just .21 from first, and
Cortez Garrett had a runner-up finish in the 400 Hurdles (54.70).Â
Garrett and Myrick were two of the four competitors in the 4x400 relay that finished third.
Peter Cavanaugh and
Domenick Rayleonard also raced for the Engineers.
RPI's top finisher in the throws events was
Josh Cohen, who won the discus with an effort of 50.29. He was four meters ahead of the runner-up (46.82) for his second title of the meet. Cohen, a graduate student, was named co-Field Performer of the Meet.
Yathin Vemula was second in the high jump,
Owen Haas was third in the triple jump, and
Joey Hinckley was fourth in the decathlon.
