Engineers Take Indoor Title for 2024

CANTON, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute dominated in the track events in earning its first Liberty League men's indoor track and field championship since 2017 on Saturday at Newell Field House on the campus of St. Lawrence University. The Engineers compiled 228 team points, easily outdistancing runner-up Rochester (180.5).  

RPI compiled at least 10 points in each of the 10 events conducted on the track including 31 points in the 3,000 on Saturday.

RIT (99) placed third followed by Union (57), St. Lawrence (46.5), Ithaca (31), Vassar (19) and Bard (1).

SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Union junior Sam Ahern swept the two sprint events, winning both the 60 (6.97 seconds) and 200 (22.11). In the 60, Ahern was the only competitor to finish under seven seconds, finishing .08 seconds ahead of three competitors who crossed the line in 7.05. Running in the last of seven heats in the 200, Ahern finished .13 seconds ahead of the runner-up, sophomore Donovan Myrick from RPI (22.24).
  • RIT first-year athlete Jacen Mitchell, the top qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles prelims, won the event in 8.55 seconds, finishing ahead of Union sophomore Jason Bois (8.62).
  • Rochester junior Sean Hendricks won the 800 in 1:53.35, earning a two-second victory over RPI first-year Jack Czarnecki (1:55.39). RPI took places two through six in the race.
  • RPI senior Cory Kennedy completed the sweep of the distance events, taking the 3,000 in a meet and facility record time of 8:18.10. He broke his own meet record of 8:20.13 set last year. The facility record was 8:29.49 set in 2008 by Seth Dubois of SUNY Cortland. Kennedy took control with three laps to go and posted a winning margin of nearly seven seconds over runner-up, sophomore Nick Lyndaker of St. Lawrence 8:25.05. RPI had seven of the top eight finishers with Lyndaker the only competitor from another team in the top eight.
  • Rochester senior Aeden Angelone won the heptathlon with 4,538 points, topping teammate Gabe Thyne (4,401) by a margin of 137 points.
  • Rochester junior Cole Goodman completed the sweep of the horizontal jumps by winning the triple jump with a meet-record leap of 14.86 meters. Goodman, who secured the record on his sixth and final jump, broke his own record of 14.84 set last year.
  • Rochester took three of the top five spots in the weight throw with junior Jordan Johnson claiming the top spot with a throw of 17.75 meters. Johnson won by more than a meter over RIT senior Aidan Hughes (16.43).
  • Rochester sophomore Aadit Jain won the high jump with a mark of 1.94 meters. Jain, who entered the competition at 1.84 meters, was successful on his first three attempts in reaching his winning height.
