Dean was a Third Team Little All-American in football (fullback) and a Second Team All-American in lacrosse.  Upon graduation he held the school records for yards gained rushing in a game (231 vs. Brooklyn College in 1948) and a season (1,016 in 1948).  He held the three-year (2,306) and four-year (2,438) career rushing marks as well as points in a three-year (127) and four-year (145) career.

An electrical engineering major from Bristol, Rhode Island, he was a member of Phalanx and the Theta Xi Fraternity.  He graduated from Colt Memorial High School prior to attending RPI.
