TROY, N.Y. – For the second straight contest, junior
Kendra Dunlop scored to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 1-1 draw against Princeton University in ECAC Hockey action on Saturday. With the tie, the Engineers are now 11-10-6, while the Tigers are 10-9-4. Both teams have an 8-4-4 conference mark and are in a three-way tie for third in the ECAC Hockey standings.
Freshman Alex Kinney's (Lake Forest, IL/The Hotchkiss School) first career goal gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead to open the game. Carrying the puck just into the RPI zone, Kinney skated to the top of the near circle and took a shot, which deflected off an Engineers' defender in the slot and arched over the goaltender and in.
Rensselaer, which faced a 6-0 disadvantage in shots to start the game, battled back less than four minutes later as Dunlop (Granum, AB/Warner Hockey School) corralled a pass from senior
Laura Gersten (Queensbury, NY/Troy-Albany Ice Cats) just inside the blueline. Skating through the far circle, she sent a shot at Tigers goalie Rachel Weber (Hudson, WI/Minnesota Thoroughbreds), who made the first stop, but Dunlop was able to slide into the low slot and bury home the rebound.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the second stanza, but a number of opportunities came in both directions as Princeton held a 9-4 advantage in shots. Rookie Corey Stearns (Falmouth, MA/Noble and Greenough School) had one of the best looks at the mid-way point of the period, skating through the slot for a backhanded shot at RPI's
Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros). The junior netminder was able to make a quick shift to her stick side and get a pad on the shot to preserve the draw.
Senior
Whitney Naslund (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson) nearly got the Engineers a go-ahead tally after she collected the puck off a pass from behind the net and took a point-blank shot at Weber.
In the third period, Rensselaer turned on the pressure with 13 shots to Princeton's eight in the stanza. Sophomore
Alisa Harrison (Vienna, VA/Washington Pride) nearly converted in the slot off a backhanded pass from Naslund, but was unable to solve Weber late in the game as the teams headed into overtime.
The Engineers held a slim 2-1shot lead in the extra session, but the goaltenders shined over the final 45 minutes of the contest. For RPI, van der Bliek made 28 saves, including 10 in the first, nine in the second and eight in the third period. Weber had 25 saves for the Tigers, making six stops in the first period, four in the second and 13 in the third. Both teams went 0 for 3 on the power play.
Rensselaer returns to the ice next weekend, traveling to North Country-rivals Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm). Princeton is also on the road on Friday and Saturday at Colgate (7pm) and Cornell (4pm).
