Box Score

TROY, N.Y. – Behind three goals in the final period, St. Lawrence University defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 3-1, in ECAC Hockey action at the Houston Field House. With the victory, the Saints improve to 8-7-5 overall and 5-3-2 in conference play, while the Engineers drop to 7-9-4 and 4-3-2 in ECAC Hockey with the loss.

The game marked the first for both teams since coming back from the holiday break ast the Engineers had not played since December 6, while the Saints were in action for the first time since December 12. Additionally, St. Lawrence continued their dominance over Rensselaer, capturing the 10th straight game in the series which began on December 9, 1995.

After a scoreless opening period, senior Allison Wright (Oakville, ON/Oakville Ice) put the Engineers on the board at 11:45 of the middle stanza after she buried the rebound of a Sierra Vadner (Apple Valley, MN/Minnesota Thoroughbreds) shot near the right post. Sophomore Katie Daniels (Rockton, IL/Chicago Mission) earned the secondary assist after she passed the puck to Vadner from the near point.

The Engineers, who held a 10-5 shot advantage in the frame, quickly saw the momentum shift in the final period as rookie Kayla Sullivan (Caledonia, ON/Stoney Creek Jr. Sabers) banged home her own rebound on the doorstep just 1:34 into the period. Senior Karlee Shields (Edmonton, AB/St. Thomas College) and freshman Kelly Sabatine (Hamilton, ON/Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) earned the assists on the goal.

St. Lawrence continued to pressure and capitalized just over three minutes later when junior Michelle Zimmerman's (Littleton, CO/National Sports Academy) shot from the right circle redirected off an RPI player in the slot and into the net past goalie Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) at 4:45.

Both teams played tough over the remainder of the stanza as Rensselaer tried to gain even ground despite being outshot, 11-5, in the stanza. Pulling van der Bliek in favor of the extra attacker, the Engineers had their chances, but a miscue at the blueline put the puck onto the stick of Saints sophomore Vanessa Emond (Levis, PQ/Dawson College Blues) who buried it into the open net at 19:44.

Despite a number of penalties on both sides, neither team would take advantage on the power play as RPI went 0 for 5, while the Saints were 0 for 4.

In goal, senior Brittony Chartier (Saskatoon, SK/University of Minnesota) made 17 stops to improve to 7-5-4 on the season. For RPI, van der Bliek stopped 23 shots and is now 7-9-3 overall.

Both teams are in action on Saturday as Rensselaer hosts third-ranked Clarkson University in Youth Day at the Houston Field House. Game time is set for 4pm and will include a meet and greet for fans with the players at the conclusion of the contest. St. Lawrence heads to Union for a 4pm tilt with the Dutchwomen in Schenectady.
