PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rookie Jessica Hoyle's tally at 16:45 of the final period proved to be the deciding factor as the Brown University women's hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 1-0, in ECAC Hockey action on Saturday. With the win, the Bears improve to 2-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play. The Engineers slip to 4-7-2 and 3-3-0 in ECAC Hockey.

Hoyle (Toronto, ON/Havergal College) netted her second goal of the season just after the Bears power play had ended, slipping a shot past Engineers netminder Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) for the eventual game-winner. The Engineers threw everything they had at Brown, holding a 15-2 advantage in shots in the period, but were unable to sneak one past sophomore Katie Jamieson (Waterloo, ON/Bluevale).

Looking to score the equalizer, Rensselaer pulled its netminder at 18:53, sending six players out on the ice to force overtime, but the Bears defense held strong for the win with Jamieson stopping 37 shots for the victory. In addition to 15 stops in the third, she had 16 saves in the second and six in the opening stanza.

Neither team was able to capitalize through the first two periods, but the Engineers certainly had their chances. RPI posted a 6-3 advantage in shots through the opening stanza and crashed the net in the second period, outshooting the Bears by a 16-6 margin.

Rensselaer's best opportunities came in the middle stanza as the visiting Engineers peppered Jamieson with five straight shots on net, which the goalie successfully turned aside.

Both teams were successful in staying out of the box throughout the contest as each side was only charge with one penalty apiece. The Engineers successfully defended their end in the second period, while each team held the other off the scoreboard during the man-advantage in the final period.

van der Bliek finished with 10 saves for RPI.

The Engineers return to action next weekend, hosting Niagara University for a pair of games on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm) at the Houston Field House. Brown is also in action next weekend, hosting North Country-rivals Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm).
