Women's Hockey Falls at Colgate

Engineers shoulder a 3-2 loss to the Raiders

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Rensselaer tied things up at 4:32 of the third period, but Colgate came out victorious in the end as Marissa Dombovy scored and the Raiders held on for a 3-2 win over the Engineers in the regular season finale for both teams. Colgate improved to 12-18-4 overall and 8-10-4 in conference play, while RPI fell to 14-13-6 and 11-7-4 in ECAC Hockey play.

The Engineers, who finish the season ranked fifth in the ECAC Hockey standings, will head to Quinnipiac next Friday for a best-of-three quarterfinals series against the Bobcats. RPI split the season series, falling 6-1 in Hamden, before defeating the Bobcats, 1-0, in Troy.  Game one on Friday will begin at 4pm at the TD Bank Sports Center.

Colgate, which swept its weekend series against Union and RPI, secured the eighth and final spot in the league quarterfinal series.  They will face top-seeded and ECAC Hockey regular season champion Cornell next weekend in Ithaca, N.Y.

Facing a 2-1 deficit heading into the final period of play, Rensselaer was able to even things up as sophomore Alisa Harrison (Vienna, VA/Washington Pride) scored on the power play at 4:32. Rookie Taylor Horton (St. Thomas, ON/Bluewater Hawks) and sophomore Amanda Castignetti (Anchorage, AK/Shattuck St. Mary's) picked up the assists on the tally.

Colgate wasted little time in regaining the lead as Dombovy scored at 7:51 on the power play off an assist from Beth Rotenberg. The Raiders, who outshot RPI, 35-23, in the game was able to hold off a late surge by the Engineers.

The Raiders opened the scoring in the contest as Katie Stewart recorded a power play tally just 3:27 into the first period. Horton was able to tie things up at 12:05 off assists from Harrison and rookie Andie Le Donne (Toronto, ON/Durham Lightning), but Stewart made it a 2-1 lead for the home team at 2:27 of the second stanza.

In goal, Lisa Plenderleith stopped 21 shots to pick up the win. For RPI, Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) made 32 saves in the loss.
