HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Laura Gersten (Queensbury, NY/Albany Ice Cats) roofed a shot into the top right corner of the net at 4:32 of the fifth-overtime to send the Rensselaer women's hockey team to a, 2-1, victory over Quinnipiac University, in game 3 of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals, at TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, the Engineers improve to 16-14-6 and advance to the semifinals next weekend.

Gersten carried the puck up the right wing boards and into the Quinnipiac (19-10-8) zone, before lifting

the puck over the glove of Bobcats' freshman netminder Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, ON/Missisauga Jr. Chiefs) and ending the second longest game in NCAA history. Rensselaer senior Whitney Naslund (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson) earned the lone assist on Gersten's seventh goal of the season.

The Engineers opened the scoring at 12:31 of the first period, when senior Allison Wright (Oakville, ON/Oakville Ice) slid pass across low slot to sophomore Alisa Harrison (Vienna, VA/Washington Pride) who stuck back her own rebound to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. A second assist was credited to freshman Andie Le Donne (Toronto, ON/Durham Lightning).

Rensselaer held that advantage until late in the third frame, when sophomore Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, CT/The Westminster School) fired a slap shot from the left circle, through a screen and past Engineers' junior goaltender Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros). Helpers on the man-advantage tally went to senior Kallie Flor (Farmington, MN/Farmington) and freshman Regan Boulton (Brandon, MB/Balmoral Hall).

van der Bliek (15-14-5) finished with 49 saves, while Vigilanti (18-10-8) ended up with 57 stops at the other end of the ice. RPI went 0 of 1 on the power-play, while Quinnipiac finished 1 for 6.

The longest game in NCAA history took place on March 10, 1996, when New Hampshire defeated Providence, 3-2, to claim the ECAC Championship, one minute and three seconds longer than the Engineers' victory.

Rensselaer travels to Ithaca to take on top-seeded Cornell next Friday (TBD).
