TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Courtney Turner scored two goals and assisted on the game-winning tally to lead the Union College women's hockey team to a, 3-2, victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this afternoon in non-league play from the Houston Field House. With the win, the Dutchwomen improve to 2-2-0 overall, while the Engineers drop to 1-3-1.
Turner (Milton, MA/Southfield School) picked up the primary assist on Union's go-ahead goal at 15:38 of the third period, after her initial shot was stopped by RPI sophomore goaltender
Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI/Madison Capitals). Sophomore Christine Valente (West Haven, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall) picked up the rebound and stuffed it in for her first of the year.
The Engineers had a number of chances in the final minute, but were unable to beat Dutchwomen sophomore goaltender Shenae Lundberg (Peterbourough, NH/Deerfield Academy), who made 30 saves on the day, including 12 in the third period alone.
Turner scored her first her first collegiate goal at 2:20 of the first period, when she jammed home a shot from close range. Valente earned the helper.
10 minutes later, Turner found the back of net once again on a similar play. Junior Stefanie Thomson (Port Perry, ON/Trinity College School) worked the puck out of the corner for freshman Jessica Kaminsky (La Salle, MB/Fort Richmond), who directed the puck towards the net. Turner then tapped it in from point blank range for the 2-0 advantage.
Rensselaer found the scoresheet late in the second period, when sophomore
Eleeza Cox (St. Catherines, ON/Ridley College) scored off the skate of a Union defender with 26 seconds left in the stanza. Fresman Jen Godin (Clarence Center, NY/Tarbor Academy) delivered the outlet pass to Cox through to neutral zone to earn the assist.
Freshman
Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA/Washington Pride) drew the hosts even at 3:30 of the third period, when her wrist shot from just inside the left circle beat Lundberg short side. Senior captain
Katie Daniels (Rockton, IL/Chicago Mission) earned the lone assist.
The Dutchwomen, who finished 3 for 4 on the man-advantage, scored three power-play goals in a game for the first time in Division I history. RPI went 0 for 5 on the power-play, while outshooting Union, 32 to 17, on the day.
The Engineers open their ECAC Hockey schedule next weekend, when they travel to North Country-rivals St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (3:30pm), respectively.
