TROY, N.Y. - Junior Kelly Babstock had a goal and an assist to lead the Quinnipiac University women's hockey team to a 3-2 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an ECAC Hockey game at Houston Field House. One of the top scorers in the nation, Babstock now has 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points in 12 games.
The visitors scored twice in the first 3:51 to take command of the game early. Sophomore Nicole Costa (Mississauga, ON/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) collected a rebound of a shot by Babstock, who carried the puck down the leftside boards and drove the net, and scored from just outside the crease. The goal, which came on the power play at the 2:26 mark, was Costa's seventh of the season.
Quinnipiac doubled its lead just over a minute later when Nicole Brown (Oshawa, ON/Whitby Jr. Wolves) picked up the puck and fired it through traffic for her second of the season. Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, ON/Ottawa Senators) and Anna Borgfeldt (Kristianstad, Sweden/Linkoping) had the assists.
RPI cut the deficit in half when freshman
Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) scored her second goal in as many games with only 27 seconds remaining in the first period. The goal game after sustained pressure by the Engineers.
The second period was scoreless and RPI came out in the third and generated offensive pressure. However, Babstock countered by taking the puck away from a defensive player and driving to the net. Her first attempt was stopped but a second try slid under the goaltender and across the line for a 3-1 lead.
Sophomore
Eleeza Cox (St. Catherines, ON/Ridley College) made it a 3-2 game when she scored with the Engineers skating with an extra player with the goalie on the bench. Rensselaer had a chance to tie it with under 10 seconds to go but senior goalie Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, ON/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) made a save off a face-off win shot.
Vigilanti finished with 30 saves for Quinnipiac, which is now 6-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the league. RPI, which is 2-7-1 and 0-4-0, saw sophomore
Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI/Madison Capitals) stop 19 shots.
The Engineers are back in action when they host Robert Morris University for two games on Friday and Saturday. Quinnipiac hosts nationally-ranked Clarkson University in a league game on Friday at 7pm.
