Horton Leads Women's Hockey Past Union

Senior captain Taylor Horton scores both goals in Engineers 2-1 win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior captain Taylor Horton scored two goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Union College, this evening in ECAC Hockey action from Messa Rink. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-15-3 (5-7-1 ECACH), while the Dutchwomen drop to 7-15-3 (0-10-3 ECACH).

With the game tied 1-1 early in the third period, Horton (St. Thomas, ON/Bluewater Hawks) swatted in the eventual game-winner from the left side of the Union cage. The tally, which was her second of the game, came at 5:24 of the frame and was assisted by junior Toni Sanders (York, PA/Susquehanna Rapids U-19) and freshman Jenn Godin (Clarence Center, NY/Tabor Academy).

The Dutchwomen pulled sophomore goaltender Shenae Lundberg (Peterborough, NH/Deerfield Academy) with 1:34 to play in regulation, but couldn't get the puck RPI sophomore netminder Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI/Madison Capitals), despite a number of opportunities.

Horton scored the game's first goal on the power-play at 15:35 of the first period. Junior Jordan Smelker (Anchorage, AK/Team Alaska 19U) fired a pass across the low slot for Horton, who swept the puck into an open net. Godin earned the secondary assist.

Union tied the game at 1-1, 14:09 into the second period, when sophomore Kelly McGrath (Chelmsford, MA/Lawrence Academy) skipped a shot past O'Brien from the right point. The tally, which came on the man-advantage was McGrath's second of the year. Assists went to sophomore Bryanne Panchuk (Calgary, AB/Edge School for Athletes) and freshman Courtney Turner (Milton, MA/Southfield School).

O'Brien (6-13-2) made 23 saves to earn the win, while Lundberg finished with 28 stops at the other end of the ice.

The Engineers and Dutchwomen conclude their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at the Houston Field House (3pm).
