TROY, N.Y. – Junior Taylor Mahoney scored twice to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Brown University, this afternoon in ECAC Hockey action from the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-8-1 (3-3-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Bears drop to 1-6-1 (0-5-1 ECAC Hockey).

Rensselaer jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, netting a pair of power-play goals in the process. Mahoney ( Cary, IL/Chicago Mission) buried a rebound off a shot by classmate Ali Svoboda (Arlington Heights, IL/Chicago Mission) at 7:17 of the frame to make it 1-0.

The Engineers took a 2-0 less than a minute later, when sophomore Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA/Washington Pride) scored her second of the year. Freshman Katie Rooney (Buffalo, MN/Buffalo) earned the lone helper.

Senior captain Jordan Smelker (Anchorage, AK/Team Alaska 19U) tallied at 15:34 of the first for RPI's second man-advantage tally of the day. Assists on Smelker's first of the year went to freshman Heidi Huhtamaki (Espoo, Finland/Espoo Blues) and sophomore Brandi Banks (Burlington, ON/Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres).

After Brown drew to within 3-1 at 2:47 of the second stanza on a goal by junior Sarah Robson (Mississauga, ON), RPI answered with Mahoney's second of the game and fourth of the season.

Junior netminder Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI/Madison Capitals) earned the win for the Engineers, stopping 15 of the 16 shots she faced. Brown senior Aubree Moore (Bowie, MD) finished with 20 saves at the other end of the rink.

The Engineers are off next weekend, but return to action on November 29 and 30, when they play a two-game series at St. Cloud State. Puck drop for both games is set for 4:07pm ET.
