Nolan and Grigsby score, before Montreal draws even

Sam Nolan
TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Sam Nolan and junior Jaimie Grigsby scored for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team in a 2-2 tie with the University of Montreal, in exhibition action, on Saturday night at the Houston Field House.

Nolan (St. Louis, MO/St. Paul's School) got the scoring started at 10:59 of the first period, one-timing home a cross-ice feed from freshman Morgan Ondrick (Shorewood, IL/Northern Chicago Young Americans).

The Engineers then made it 2-0 at 13:25 of the frame, when Grigsby (Whitby, ON/Whitby Wolves) redirected a shot from the blue line past Montreal goaltender Maude Trevisan. Seniors Amanda Kimmerle (Anoka, MN/Anoka) and Marisa Raspa (Downington, PA/North American Hockey Academy) picked up the assists on the power play tally.

Montreal fought back to score two goals in the second period, knotting the score at 2-2. Catherine DuBois (Montreal, PQ/Cegep Limoilou) took advantage of a bouncing puck that found its way past RPI junior netminder Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) at 7:18 of the period, before Alexandra Labelle (St-Louis De Gonzague, PQ/Cegep de Saint-Laurent) tipped in the tying goal at 9:33. Rookie Jade Vix (Offendorf, France/Strasbourg) earned the helper on Labelle's goal.

Both backup goaltenders held strong after taking over the third. Junior Kira Bombay (Nepean, ON/Nepean Wildcats) stopped all five shots she faced, while Sarah Lessuer did not allow a goal on 12 shots over the final 25 minutes, including a five-minute RPI power play.

Rensselaer outshot the Carabins, 33-14, including 13-0 in the opening stanza. The Engineers went 1 for 5 on the power play, while Montreal was 0 for 2.

The Engineers begin regular season play next weekend, when they travel to Ohio State for a two-game series, beginning on Friday (6:07pm). Montreal travel to Vermont tomorrow (2pm).
